82nd Reconnaissance Squadron Winged Eye Emblem

The 82nd’s winged eye connects prewar observation crews with the intelligence mission flown from Kadena today.

About the Artifact

This eye was watching before there was a separate U.S. Air Force. Approved in 1938 for the 82nd Observation Squadron, its eye, white wing and jagged ray connect the unit’s early observation days with wartime camera-equipped fighters and the RC-135 era. Aircraft and sensors changed; finding out what others cannot see remains the job.
